How it works

A brick doesn’t just occupy its own face — it also takes up half a mortar joint on each side. The tool adds the joint thickness to both the length and height of the brick face, giving the real area each brick covers in the wall. Dividing one square metre by that area gives bricks per m²; multiplying by your wall area gives the total.

The waste margin (10% by default) covers cuts at corners and openings, breakages and the odd reject. The final figure is rounded up to whole bricks, because you can’t buy a fraction of one. If you leave the joint blank it’s treated as zero — useful for dry-stacked blocks or a quick face-only estimate.

Practical examples

A single-brick wall

For 10 m² using a standard 25 × 6.5 cm brick face and a 1 cm joint, each brick covers 0.0195 m², so you need about 51 per m² — roughly 565 bricks with 10% waste.

Hollow blocks go further

Switch the face to 25 × 19 cm (a typical block) and the same wall needs far fewer units — larger faces mean fewer pieces and less mortar, which is why blocks are quicker to lay.

No waste, face only

Leave the joint and waste blank to get the bare face count — handy for estimating a decorative slip or checking a supplier’s "bricks per m²" claim.

Frequently asked questions

What brick size should I enter?

Use the face that will show in the wall — the length and height you see once it’s laid, not the depth. A standard Serbian clay brick (puna opeka) is 250 × 120 × 65 mm, so laid as a stretcher the face is 25 × 6.5 cm.

Why does the mortar joint matter?

The joint spaces bricks apart, so each one effectively covers a slightly larger area than its own face. Ignoring it overestimates the count by several percent. A 10 mm joint is typical for brickwork; blockwork often uses similar.

How much waste should I allow?

10% is a sensible default for a straightforward wall. Add more — 12–15% — for lots of corners, openings or a decorative bond with many cuts, and less if the wall is simple and you’re experienced.

Does this include mortar quantity?

No — it counts bricks only. Mortar volume depends on joint thickness, brick size and wall thickness; as a rough guide, a single-brick wall uses roughly 0.02–0.03 m³ of mortar per m². Treat that separately.

Can I use it for a double-thickness wall?

Yes, but multiply the result by the number of leaves. A cavity or double-brick wall is effectively two walls, so double the count and remember it also needs ties.

How do I get the wall area?

Multiply wall length by height, then subtract large openings like doors and windows. The area calculator can do this for irregular shapes; feed the net figure in here.

Are blocks and bricks calculated the same way?

Yes — the maths is identical, only the face size changes. Enter the block’s face dimensions and joint and the tool handles it. Larger faces simply produce a smaller count.

Why is the total always rounded up?

You buy bricks in whole units, and running short mid-job means a second trip and a possible colour-batch mismatch. Rounding up, plus the waste margin, keeps you covered.

Is anything I enter uploaded?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere and analytics never receives your figures.
