Every appliance costs something to run, and it comes down to three numbers: how much power it draws, how long it is on, and what you pay per kilowatt-hour. Enter those and this calculator shows the energy it uses and what it costs per day, month and year — in whatever currency your bill uses.

How it works

Energy is power multiplied by time. A device’s power is given in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW); 1000 W equals 1 kW. Running a 1 kW device for one hour uses one kilowatt-hour (kWh), the unit your electricity bill charges by. So daily energy = power in kW × hours per day, and the cost is that energy multiplied by your price per kWh.

The monthly figure multiplies the daily amount by 30 and the yearly figure by 365, so both are steady-use estimates rather than a specific billing period. Enter the price for a single kWh exactly as it appears on your bill; the tool never assumes a currency or tariff, and it does not add standing charges, taxes or block-tariff steps, which vary by supplier.

Practical examples

An old 100 W light bulb

A 100 W bulb on for 5 hours a day uses 0.5 kWh daily. At a price of 10 per kWh that is 5 per day, about 150 per month and 1,825 per year — the case for switching to LED.

An air conditioner in summer

A 2 kW air conditioner running 8 hours a day uses 16 kWh daily. At 12 per kWh, that is 192 a day and roughly 5,760 over a 30-day month — the kind of jump that shows up on a July bill.

A fridge that never switches off

A fridge draws power intermittently, averaging about 150 W over 24 hours a day — roughly 3.6 kWh daily. At 9 per kWh that is around 32 a day and close to 1,180 per month of always-on cost.

Frequently asked questions

What is a kilowatt-hour (kWh)?

A kilowatt-hour is the energy used by a 1000-watt device running for one hour. It is the unit electricity is billed in, so multiplying kWh by your price per kWh gives the cost.

Where do I find a device’s power rating?

Look on the rating label (often on the back or base), in the manual, or on the power supply. It is shown in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). If only volts and amps are given, multiply them to get watts.

What price per kWh should I enter?

Use the energy price from your own electricity bill or your supplier’s tariff, in your local currency. The result comes out in that same currency. If your tariff has day and night rates, run the calculation twice.

Why is my real bill higher than this estimate?

Bills usually add a fixed standing charge, taxes and sometimes higher rates above a monthly threshold. This tool covers only the energy cost of the device itself, which is the part you can change by using it less.

How do I convert watts to kilowatts?

Divide watts by 1000. A 2500 W heater is 2.5 kW. You can also just enter the value in watts and switch the unit toggle to W — the tool does the conversion.

How can I estimate hours for something like a fridge?

A fridge or freezer cycles on and off, so use its average power over the full day and enter 24 hours, or use the annual kWh figure from its energy label divided by 365 to back out an average.

Does a higher wattage always mean higher cost?

Not on its own — cost depends on wattage and time together. A 2000 W kettle used for 5 minutes costs far less than a 40 W router left on all day. Both power and hours matter.

Why does the tool use 30 days for a month and 365 for a year?

They are simple, consistent averages for steady use. Your actual bill counts the real days in the period, so treat the monthly and yearly numbers as close estimates, not exact charges.

Can I compare two appliances with it?

Yes. Run each one with its own wattage and typical hours at the same price per kWh, and compare the yearly cost — that is the clearest way to see which is cheaper to own over time.

Is standby power included?

Only if you account for it. Many devices draw a few watts on standby around the clock; to include that, add a second run with the standby wattage over 24 hours.
