Wi-Fi QR Code Generator

How it works

The code encodes a short text string in the WIFI: format that Android and iPhone cameras recognise, e.g. WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:password;;. When scanned, the phone reads the network name, security type and password and offers a one-tap “Join network”.

The security type must match your router. WPA/WPA2/WPA3 is the setting for almost every home network today; WEP is only for old equipment; and “open” is for networks with no password, where the password field disappears. Getting this wrong is the usual reason a scan fails to connect.

The password lives inside the QR image itself — there is no server, link or account involved. That is convenient but also means anyone who can photograph the printed code can read the password, so treat the printout like the password itself.

Practical examples

Guest Wi-Fi on the fridge

Enter your home network name and password, choose WPA/WPA2, and download the SVG to print. Stick it on the fridge — visitors scan it and connect without you reading out “capital B, number 7, dash…”.

Café or rental table card

Encode the venue Wi-Fi, download the PNG, and drop it into your table-card design. Guests connect in seconds; you stop repeating the password twenty times a day. Reprint whenever you rotate the password.

A separate guest network

If your router has a guest SSID, make the code for that one instead of your main network. Visitors get online without ever learning your primary password or reaching devices on your home network.

Frequently asked questions

Which phones can scan a Wi-Fi QR code?

Practically all current ones. iPhones (iOS 11+) and most Android phones (Android 10+) read Wi-Fi codes straight from the built-in camera app — point, tap the prompt, and it offers to join. Older phones may need a QR scanner app.

Which security type should I choose?

Pick WPA/WPA2/WPA3 for virtually every modern home or office router — it is the default. Choose WEP only for very old hardware, and “open” for a password-free network. It must match your router’s actual setting or the join will fail.

Is my password sent anywhere?

No. The network name and password are turned into the QR image inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored — you can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.

Is it safe to print the code?

The password is embedded in the code, so anyone who photographs it can extract it. That is fine for a home or café where you would share the password anyway, but do not post it publicly online, and use a guest network for extra separation.

What if my password has special characters?

They are handled automatically. Characters that the format treats specially — such as ; , : " and backslash — are escaped for you, so passwords with symbols encode correctly.

Should I download PNG or SVG?

PNG for screens and quick sharing; SVG for printing, because it scales to any size without blurring. Both encode the identical network details.

What is a hidden network and when do I tick that box?

A hidden network does not broadcast its name, so phones will not find it unless told to look. Only tick “hidden” if you deliberately disabled SSID broadcast on your router; for normal networks, leave it off.

The scan connects but the internet does not work — why?

That usually means the code and the join succeeded but something else is wrong: the wrong password was entered originally, the router is down, or a captive portal (a sign-in page) needs completing. Double-check the password field matches the router exactly.

Do I need to regenerate the code if I change my password?

Yes. The code is a snapshot of the details you entered. Change the Wi-Fi password and the old code stops working — make a fresh one and reprint it.

Can I use this for a work or public network?

Yes, as long as you are allowed to share access. For public venues, a guest SSID with its own password is best practice so scanning does not expose the main network.
