Area Converter

Type an area, pick the unit you have and the unit you want, and read the answer instantly — along with the same area in every other unit at once. It covers the metric units land is measured in here, including ares and hectares, plus the imperial units (acres, square feet) you meet in listings and foreign documents. Everything runs in your browser.

How it works

Each unit is defined by how many square metres it equals, and every conversion goes through the square metre as a shared base. Your value is turned into square metres and then into the target unit, so results stay consistent — converting hectares to acres and back returns exactly what you started with.

Squared units grow by the square of the linear factor: since one metre is 100 cm, one square metre is 100 × 100 = 10,000 cm². The imperial factors come from exact definitions (one square foot is 0.09290304 m², one acre is 4,046.8564224 m²). Results show up to six decimals with trailing zeros trimmed.

Practical examples

Land plot in ares to square metres

A plot advertised as 6 ari is 600 m² (1 ar = 100 m²). Enter 6, from ares, to square metres — handy when one listing uses ari and another m².

Hectares to acres for farmland

A 2.5-hectare field is about 6.18 acres. Convert hectares to acres to compare local farmland with an area quoted in acres.

Apartment size in square feet

A 72 m² apartment is roughly 775 ft². Convert square metres to square feet to read a foreign floor plan against a size you know in m².

Frequently asked questions

How many square metres are in one ar?

One ar is exactly 100 square metres. The ar is a metric land unit still widely used here — a plot of "6 ari" is 600 m². The tool keeps it as its own unit so you never have to multiply by hand.

How big is a hectare?

A hectare is 10,000 m², which is 100 ares or a square 100 m on each side. It is the standard unit for farmland and larger plots; one hectare is about 2.471 acres.

How do I convert hectares to acres?

Multiply hectares by about 2.471, since one hectare is 10,000 m² and one acre is 4,046.856 m². Enter the value in hectares and read the acre row — the tool uses the exact factor rather than a rounded one.

How many square feet are in a square metre?

One square metre is about 10.7639 square feet, because one foot is 0.3048 m and the area factor is that squared. So a 50 m² space is roughly 538 ft².

Why is a square metre 10,000 cm² and not 100?

Area scales with the square of the length factor. One metre is 100 cm, so one square metre is 100 × 100 = 10,000 cm². This is the most common area mistake, and the reason the tool does the squaring for you.

What is the difference between an ar and an acre?

They are unrelated despite the similar name. An ar is metric — 100 m². An acre is imperial — 4,046.856 m², about 40 times larger. Both are in the list so they are never confused.

Does it handle the decimal comma?

Yes. You can type 6,5 or 6.5 and both mean six and a half. Thousand separators in pasted numbers are read too, so 1.234,5 is interpreted correctly.

How precise are the results?

Conversions run at full floating-point precision using exact unit definitions and are shown to six decimal places with trailing zeros removed — precise enough for property, farming and everyday use.

Are the numbers I enter sent anywhere?

No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser; nothing is uploaded and analytics never receives the values you type.
