Every unit is defined by how many litres it holds, so conversions go through litres as a base: your value becomes litres, then the target unit. One US cup is 236.588 ml, a US gallon is 3.785 litres, and an imperial (UK) gallon is larger at 4.546 litres — the tool keeps them distinct so you don’t mix them up.
