How it works

The run is divided into sections (bays) between posts: fence length ÷ post spacing, rounded up so a leftover span still gets its own bay. A straight fence always has one more post than sections — the two ends plus the dividers — so posts = sections + 1. Total rails is sections × the rails per section you choose (usually two or three).

If you enter a picket width and gap, the tool counts boards too: each picket takes up its own width plus one gap, so the number of pickets is the fence length divided by that combined spacing, rounded up. Leave the gap blank for a solid, no-gap fence. Everything is a straight-run estimate — corners and gates need their own allowance.

Practical examples

A 20 m rail fence

At 2.5 m post spacing that’s 8 sections, so 9 posts. With 2 rails per section you need 16 rails. No picket size entered, so no board count.

Adding pickets

Same fence with 10 cm pickets and a 4 cm gap: each picket plus gap spans 14 cm, so a 20 m run needs about 143 pickets.

A solid board fence

Leave the gap blank for boards butted together: 12 cm boards over 12 m gives 100 boards, plus the posts and rails to carry them.

Frequently asked questions

What post spacing should I use?

The default 2.5 m suits most timber and mesh fences. Heavier panels or windy, exposed sites call for closer spacing (1.8–2.0 m); check your panel width, since panel fences must span exactly post-to-post.

Why is there one more post than section?

Each section needs a post at both ends, and neighbouring sections share the post between them. So a straight run of N sections has N+1 posts — the two ends plus the internal dividers.

How many rails per section do I need?

Two is standard for fences up to about 1.2 m; taller fences usually get three for rigidity. Enter whatever your design uses and the tool multiplies it across all sections.

How do I count pickets?

Enter the picket width and the gap between pickets. The tool adds them for the spacing each board occupies and divides the fence length by that. A larger gap means fewer, more widely spaced boards.

Does it handle corners and gates?

No — it assumes one straight run. For an L-shape or a perimeter, calculate each straight side separately and add them, remembering each corner adds a shared post. Subtract gate openings from the length.

What about concrete for the posts?

That’s a separate calculation — post-hole volume depends on hole diameter and depth. Multiply one hole’s volume by the post count and use the concrete calculator for the mix.

Should I add extra for waste?

Buy a few spare pickets and a rail or two — timber warps and splits, and a couple of rejects per bundle is normal. The tool gives the exact count; add your own margin on top.

Can I use it for mesh or panel fencing?

Yes for posts and sections — each panel is one section, so set the spacing to the panel width. Skip the picket fields, since panels aren’t counted board by board.

Is anything I enter uploaded?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere and analytics never receives your figures.
