Subtract the start time from the end time, then take off any unpaid break. This tool does that for you: enter both clock times and the break in minutes, and it returns the worked time in hours and minutes and as decimal hours.

If the end time is the same as or earlier than the start time, the shift is treated as crossing midnight and a full 24 hours is added before subtracting. So 23:00 to 07:00 is eight hours, not a negative number.

Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of an hour: 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5, 7 hours 15 minutes is 7.25. Payroll systems, invoices and spreadsheets multiply an hourly rate by decimal hours, so this is usually the figure you copy into them.

Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25, 20 minutes is about 0.33, 45 minutes is 0.75. The tool shows the decimal value automatically so you do not have to do the division.

Enter an hourly rate and the tool multiplies it by the decimal hours to estimate gross pay for the shift. It is a rough figure before tax, overtime premiums and other deductions, which depend on your local rules and contract.

No. It reports total hours worked; it does not split them into regular and overtime or apply premium rates. If your first eight hours are paid at one rate and the rest at another, work out each block separately.

The inputs use the 24-hour clock through your browser’s native time picker, so 5:30 in the afternoon is 17:30. On most devices you can type the digits directly or use the small clock control.

No. The tool works only with the two clock values you type and knows nothing about a calendar date, so it never adjusts for time zones or a daylight-saving change. On a night when the clocks shift, add or subtract that hour yourself.

It is not rounded. The break is subtracted in whole minutes exactly as entered, and the worked total is exact to the minute. Rounding to the nearest quarter hour, if your employer does that, is a separate policy you would apply afterwards.

The tool refuses the calculation and shows a message, because a break at least as long as the time between clock-in and clock-out would leave zero or negative hours. Check the times and the break value.

This tool covers one shift at a time. To total a week, calculate each day and add the decimal-hour figures, which sum cleanly (unlike H:MM values, where 45 + 30 minutes rolls over into the next hour).
