Egg Incubation Calculator

Choose the day the eggs went into the incubator and the species, and the tool lays out the whole schedule: the expected hatch date, the window either side of it, the days to candle, and the day you stop turning and raise the humidity. Chicken, duck, goose, turkey, quail, guinea fowl, pheasant, pigeon, Muscovy and ostrich are all covered.

The day they went into the incubator — counted as day 0.

How it works

Each species has a typical incubation period — 21 days for chicken eggs, 28 for ducks and turkeys, 30 for geese, 35 for Muscovy ducks, 17 for Japanese quail — and the hatch date is simply the setting date plus that many days. The setting day counts as day 0, so a chicken egg set on the 5th hatches on the 26th.

Because temperature, egg size and breed all shift the timing, the published range matters as much as the single date. The tool shows a window: chicken eggs commonly pip anywhere from day 20 to day 22, and goose eggs anywhere from 28 to 33. A hatch a day early or late is normal, not a fault.

Two other dates decide the outcome. Candling — holding a light to the egg — is usually done around day 7 and day 14 for chickens, to remove clear and dead eggs before they spoil. Lockdown is the last three days: turning stops, humidity goes up, and the incubator stays shut so the membranes do not dry onto the chick. Day counting uses UTC midnights, so a daylight-saving change during a 35-day incubation cannot move a date.

Practical examples

Chicken eggs set on 5 August 2026

The hatch falls on 26 August, with a window of 25–27 August. Candle on 12 and 19 August, and stop turning on 23 August — day 18.

Muscovy ducks take five weeks

Eggs set on 1 March 2026 hatch around 5 April: 35 days, a full week longer than Pekin ducks and two weeks longer than chickens.

Goose eggs have a wide window

Set on 1 March, the expected date is 31 March but the published range runs to 3 April. With geese the spread is genuinely that wide, so do not open the incubator early.

Quail are the quickest

Japanese quail set on 1 March hatch on 18 March — 17 days, with candling worthwhile only around day 7 because the shells are speckled and hard to read.

Frequently asked questions

How long do chicken eggs take to hatch?

21 days at the standard 37.5 °C. Cooler incubation runs late and warmer runs early, which is why the tool shows a 20–22 day window rather than a single guaranteed date.

Does the setting day count as day one?

This tool counts the setting day as day 0, so a chicken hatch lands 21 days later on the calendar. Some hatchery charts call the setting day "day 1" and then quote hatch on day 22 — the calendar date is the same, only the labelling differs.

What is lockdown and why does it matter?

The last three days before hatching: stop turning, raise humidity, and keep the lid closed. The chick positions itself for pipping and needs the membrane moist. Opening the incubator now can dry the membrane and shrink-wrap the chick.

When should I candle?

Around day 7 to spot clear (infertile) eggs and early deaths, and around day 14 to check development. Remove anything clear or with a blood ring — a rotten egg can burst and contaminate the batch.

Why does the same species hatch over two or three days?

Eggs stored longer, larger eggs and cooler spots in the incubator all run late. A staggered hatch across 24–48 hours is normal; leave late eggs alone until the window closes.

What if nothing hatches on the expected date?

Wait out the full window, and then some. Poor hatches usually trace back to incubation temperature, humidity, turning, egg storage or fertility rather than the date itself.

Can I incubate different species together?

Only if the periods and lockdown days line up, which they rarely do. Mixing chickens and ducks means opening the incubator in the middle of a lockdown, so most keepers run separate batches.

Does the tool tell me the temperature and humidity to use?

No. Those come from your incubator manual and species guidance — commonly around 37.5 °C forced-air with 45–55% humidity, rising for lockdown, but waterfowl and your machine may differ.

Where do the incubation periods come from?

Published poultry extension and hatchery tables. They are long-established and consistent across sources; the ranges reflect real breed and condition variation rather than disagreement.

How long can eggs be stored before setting?

Hatchability starts dropping after about a week of storage, faster after ten days. Store them cool (around 15 °C), pointed end down, and set them sooner rather than later.

Can I use it to plan when chicks arrive?

That is its best use: pick the date you want chicks and count backwards. If you want chicks on the first weekend of September, chicken eggs go in 21 days earlier.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The dates stay in your browser; the species table ships with the page.
