How it works
The tool counts backwards or forwards in 90-minute blocks from the time you give it, and adds a 15-minute buffer for the time it takes most people to actually fall asleep. If you want to wake at 07:00, six cycles is nine hours of sleep, so it suggests a bedtime of 21:45 (07:00 minus nine hours minus the 15-minute buffer). Five cycles gives 23:15, four gives 00:45, and so on. In bedtime mode it does the reverse, adding the buffer and then whole cycles to find wake-up times.
It offers six, five, four and three cycles because that covers a normal night down to a long nap. The 90-minute figure and the fall-asleep buffer are averages, not fixed facts — real cycles run anywhere from about 70 to 110 minutes and change through the night, and how long you take to drop off depends on the day. Treat the times as a starting point and adjust by 10 or 15 minutes based on how you actually feel on waking.
Practical examples
You have to be up at 06:30 for work
Switch to wake-up mode and enter 06:30. Six cycles points to a 21:15 bedtime (nine hours of sleep), and five cycles to 22:45 (seven and a half hours). If 21:15 is too early, 22:45 still lands you at the end of a cycle rather than in the middle of one.
You are heading to bed at 23:00
Switch to bedtime mode and enter 23:00. Allowing 15 minutes to fall asleep, five cycles wakes you at 06:45 and six cycles at 08:15. Setting the alarm for one of these is gentler than an arbitrary 07:20, which would cut a cycle short.
A short afternoon nap

How many sleep cycles should I aim for?
Most adults do well on five or six full cycles a night, which is about seven and a half to nine hours. Four cycles (six hours) is on the short side but still lands you at the end of a cycle. Pick the option that fits the hours you have.
Is a sleep cycle exactly 90 minutes?
No. Ninety minutes is a widely used average. Real cycles vary from roughly 70 to 110 minutes between people and even across a single night — early cycles tend to be shorter and later ones longer. The tool uses 90 minutes as a practical estimate, not a measurement of your body.
Why do I sometimes wake up groggy even after eight hours?
That heavy, disoriented feeling is often sleep inertia — being woken out of deep sleep in the middle of a cycle. Waking near the lighter end of a cycle is what this tool tries to help with, though total sleep and sleep quality matter just as much.
What is the 15-minute buffer for?
It is the time most people take to drift off after the lights go out, called sleep latency. Counting cycles from the moment you get into bed would be too early, so the tool assumes you are actually asleep about 15 minutes later.
What if I take much longer than 15 minutes to fall asleep?
Then shift the suggested bedtime earlier by the extra time you need. If you usually lie awake for 40 minutes, going to bed about 25 minutes before the suggestion lines the cycles back up.
Does this work for naps?
Partly. A single 90-minute cycle can leave you feeling refreshed because you wake from light sleep, and a very short 20-minute nap avoids deep sleep entirely. The awkward zone is roughly 40 to 60 minutes, when the alarm often catches you in deep sleep.
Should children and teenagers use the same numbers?
No. Children need more total sleep than adults, and teenagers naturally shift to a later body clock. The 90-minute cycle idea still applies, but use age-appropriate total sleep guidance rather than treating six adult cycles as a target.
How does caffeine affect this?
Caffeine can delay sleep and reduce deep sleep for several hours after your last cup, so even a well-timed bedtime may not give you the rest the cycle count implies. Many people find it helps to stop caffeine six to eight hours before bed.
Do the times account for going to bed after midnight?
Yes. The calculation wraps around midnight, so a late bedtime correctly produces a morning wake-up time and an early wake target correctly produces an evening bedtime.
Everyone is different — is this really accurate for me?
Sleep needs and cycle lengths are genuinely individual. Treat the output as a reasonable starting schedule, note how you feel on waking, and nudge the times until they fit. A consistent bed and wake time usually matters more than hitting an exact cycle.
