How it works
A metric tyre code carries three numbers. 205 is the section width in millimetres, 55 is the aspect ratio — the sidewall height as a percentage of that width — and 16 is the rim diameter in inches. So the sidewall here is 205 × 0.55 = 112.75 mm, and the overall diameter is the rim (16 × 25.4 = 406.4 mm) plus two sidewalls: 631.9 mm. Rolling circumference is that diameter × π, which also gives revolutions per kilometre.
The comparison is mostly about circumference, because that is what the car measures. A speedometer counts wheel revolutions and multiplies by the circumference it was calibrated for, so a bigger tyre covers more ground per revolution than the gauge assumes and the needle reads low. The ratio is linear: fit a tyre 3 % larger in diameter and at an indicated 100 km/h you are really doing about 103 km/h. Odometer readings and any distance-based service interval drift by the same percentage.
The ±3 % diameter figure is the tolerance normally accepted when changing tyre size, and it is what the pass/fail line here uses. It is a convention rather than a legal rule: what is actually approved for your car is on the manufacturer’s plate (usually in the door frame or fuel flap) and in the registration document. Beyond diameter, a wider tyre also needs clearance in the arch and at full steering lock, which no calculator can check for you.
The parser accepts the ways sizes are written in practice: 205/55R16, 205/55 R 16, 205-55-16, 205/55ZR16, and half-inch rims like 215/75R17.5. Load index and speed rating (91V, 95H XL) are ignored, because they affect what the tyre may carry and how fast it may run, not its geometry.
Practical examples
A proper plus-size swap
205/55 R16 → 225/45 R17: the rim grows an inch, the sidewall drops from 112.8 mm to 101.3 mm, and the overall diameter changes by under 8 mm — around 1 %, comfortably inside tolerance. The speedometer stays honest; the ride gets firmer because there is less sidewall to absorb bumps.
Wider only, same rim
205/55 R16 → 225/55 R16 adds 20 mm of width but also 11 mm of sidewall each side, so the diameter grows 22 mm — 3.5 %, outside the usual tolerance. At an indicated 100 km/h you would be doing about 103.5 km/h, and the arch has to accept the extra width too.
Smaller winter wheels
Going from 225/45 R17 to 205/55 R16 is the classic winter downgrade: a taller sidewall on a smaller rim keeps the diameter almost identical, so the speedometer is unaffected, while the extra sidewall gives more protection against potholes and kerbs.
Checking a used car’s wheels
The plate says 195/65 R15 but 205/60 R16 is fitted. The tool shows the diameter difference (about 2 %) and the speedometer effect, so you can tell whether the previous owner picked a sensible alternative or something that makes the odometer read short.

What do the numbers in 205/55 R16 mean?
205 is the tread width in millimetres, 55 is the sidewall height as a percentage of that width (so 112.75 mm), R means radial construction, and 16 is the rim diameter in inches. Only these three numbers determine the tyre’s size; letters after them describe load and speed capability.
How much difference in diameter is acceptable?
The widely used limit is ±3 %, which is what the tool checks. Inside that, the speedometer error stays small and ABS and stability systems keep working from sensible assumptions. Beyond it you are into territory where the gauge, the odometer and driver-assistance calibration all drift together.
Which way does the speedometer error go?
Bigger tyres make the speedometer read low — you are going faster than it shows. Smaller tyres make it read high. Manufacturers deliberately build in a small over-read from the factory, so a slightly larger tyre can leave you closer to the true speed than the original, which is a reason to check rather than assume.
Does a different tyre size change my odometer and fuel consumption reading?
Yes, by the same percentage as the circumference. A 2 % larger tyre means every 100 km driven registers as about 98 km, which quietly shifts service intervals and makes the trip computer’s l/100 km figure optimistic. Consumption itself changes too, but for physical reasons — mass, rolling resistance and frontal area.
What is plus sizing?
Fitting a bigger rim with a lower-profile tyre so the overall diameter stays the same: one inch more rim usually means about ten points less aspect ratio and ten to twenty millimetres more width. Steering response sharpens, comfort drops, and wheel damage from potholes becomes more likely.
Can I fit a wider tyre on my existing rims?
Within limits — each rim width supports a range of tyre widths, typically about 20 mm either side of nominal. This tool covers the geometry, not the rim-fitment table, so check the tyre maker’s recommended rim width as well as clearance in the wheel arch.
Why does my winter size differ from the summer one?
Narrower tyres on a smaller rim cut through snow and slush better and cost less, and the taller sidewall survives frozen potholes. That is why manufacturers often list a smaller winter size on the same car — the diameter is kept close so nothing else needs to change.
Do all four tyres have to be the same size?
On the same axle, always. Some cars are designed with a staggered setup (wider at the rear), and that is fine when the manufacturer specifies it. Mixing diameters across an axle, or across axles on a four-wheel-drive car, loads the differential and can damage it.
What does 215/75R17.5 mean — why the half inch?
Some light-truck and van wheels use half-inch rim diameters. The tool accepts them with a dot or a comma, and the geometry works the same way; only the rim conversion changes (17.5 × 25.4 = 444.5 mm).
Is the load index or speed rating checked?
No, and it is deliberately ignored so the size still parses when you paste a full sidewall marking. Load index and speed rating do matter legally and practically — never go below what the vehicle documentation requires — but they do not change any dimension.
Does the calculator know what my car accepts?
No. It does the geometry; approval is vehicle-specific. The manufacturer’s plate and the registration document list the approved sizes, and an inspection will check against those, not against a percentage.
