How it works

The ratio is waist ÷ height in the same units, so the number is unitless — 80 cm waist and 180 cm height gives 0.44. The well-known rule of thumb is "keep your waist to less than half your height", i.e. a ratio under 0.5. Because it’s scaled to your height, the same 0.5 threshold works across different body sizes without separate charts.

This tool uses the Ashwell boundaries: below 0.4 is flagged as possibly low, 0.4–0.49 is healthy, 0.5–0.59 is increased risk, and 0.6 or above is high risk. It also shows your personal healthy waist band — from 0.4 to 0.5 times your height — so you have a concrete centimetre target rather than an abstract number.

Practical examples

Within the healthy band

Waist 80 cm, height 180 cm → ratio 0.44, healthy. The tool shows a healthy waist range of 72–90 cm for that height, so there’s comfortable room.

Crossing the half-your-height line

Waist 99 cm, height 180 cm → ratio 0.55, "increased risk". The waist is past the 90 cm half-height mark, a signal to act before it climbs further.

Same waist, different heights

An 85 cm waist is a 0.53 ratio at 160 cm height (increased) but 0.44 at 193 cm (healthy). This is exactly why height-scaling beats judging waist size alone.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I measure my waist?

Around the midpoint between the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hip bones — roughly at the navel for most people. Stand relaxed, breathe out normally, and keep the tape snug but not compressing the skin. Measure on bare skin for consistency.

Why use waist-to-height instead of BMI?

BMI uses only weight and height, so it can’t tell where fat sits and is thrown off by muscle. WHtR targets central (abdominal) fat, which is more closely linked to heart and metabolic risk. Many researchers consider it a better quick screen — and it’s just as easy to work out.

What ratio should I aim for?

Under 0.5 for most adults. The simplest way to remember it: your waist should be less than half your height. Below about 0.4 may indicate you’re underweight around the middle, which is worth discussing with a doctor.

Does the 0.5 threshold apply to everyone?

It’s a good general cut-off for adults of both sexes and most ethnicities, which is part of its appeal. Children use age-adjusted charts, and some populations use slightly lower thresholds, so treat it as a screen rather than a precise line.

Is a very low ratio always good?

Not necessarily. A ratio well below 0.4 can reflect being underweight, which carries its own risks. The healthiest range sits between roughly 0.4 and 0.5, which is why the tool flags very low values too.

Can I enter inches instead of centimetres?

The ratio itself is unit-free, so inches would give the same number — but the healthy waist range shown assumes centimetres. For that range to make sense, enter both measurements in centimetres.

How often should I re-check it?

Monthly is plenty. Body measurements move slowly, so measure under the same conditions each time — same time of day, same tape position — and watch the trend rather than day-to-day noise.

Does it replace medical advice?

No. It’s a screening estimate. A rising ratio is a useful prompt to look at diet, activity and other risk factors, but only a clinician can assess your health properly.
