Choose a target date and time and watch the countdown tick down second by second — days, hours, minutes and seconds until the moment arrives. Set it to a birthday, a deadline, a holiday or a launch. If the date has already passed, it counts up to show how long ago it was. Everything runs live in your browser.
Interpreted in your local time zone.
Pick a date and time to start the countdown.
How it works
The tool takes the difference between the target moment and right now, then breaks it into whole days, hours, minutes and seconds. It updates once a second, so the seconds field genuinely ticks rather than sitting on a snapshot.
The target is read in your device’s local time zone, the same one the date picker uses. That means the countdown reflects your clock — pick 1 January at 00:00 and it lands on midnight where you are, not UTC.
When the target is in the future the labels read “remaining”; once it passes, the display flips to “elapsed” and counts up. Because it depends on your device clock, an incorrect system time will shift the result — the math itself is exact to the second.
Practical examples
New Year countdown
Set the target to 1 January, 00:00. The tiles show something like 163 days, 8 hours, 42 minutes and 15 seconds, refreshing every second — the classic countdown to display at a party or on a screen.
A project deadline
Point it at Friday 17:00 when a report is due. Seeing “2 days, 4 hours” left is a sharper nudge than a date on a calendar, and it keeps updating as the deadline nears.
Time since an event
Pick a date in the past — say when you quit smoking or started a job — and the counter shows the elapsed time, ticking upward. A simple way to track a streak or an anniversary.
Frequently asked questions
Does the countdown update in real time?
Yes. It recalculates every second while the page is open, so the seconds field visibly ticks. Leave the tab open and it keeps running.
Which time zone does it use?
Your device’s local time zone — the same one the date-and-time picker shows. The target you choose is interpreted as local time, so midnight means midnight where you are.
What happens when the date has already passed?
The display switches from “remaining” to “elapsed” and counts up instead of down, showing how much time has passed since the target. It never shows negative numbers.
Can I count down to a time on the same day?
Yes. Pick today’s date and a later time and it counts down the hours, minutes and seconds. This is handy for a short timer to a meeting or an oven timer that you want expressed as a clock time.
Is this the same as “days between dates”?
They overlap but differ. Days Between Dates gives a fixed count between two calendar dates; this tool gives a live, ticking countdown including hours, minutes and seconds to a specific moment.
Will it keep running if I close the tab?
No. It only counts while the page is open, since it runs in your browser with no server behind it. Reopen the page and it resumes from the current time — you just re-enter or it remembers nothing.
Why does the count look slightly off?
The countdown trusts your device clock. If your computer or phone time is wrong or drifting, the remaining time shifts by the same amount. Check your system clock if precision matters.
Can I use it for a public countdown on a screen?
Yes — set the target and leave the page displayed. The large tiles are readable across a room, and there is no watermark or sign-up. Note that each device shows the count based on its own clock and time zone.
Is anything I enter saved or sent anywhere?
No. The target date stays in your browser and the calculation is entirely local. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored.
