Turn a step count from your phone or fitness tracker into an actual distance — or go the other way and see how many steps a given distance takes. The tool works out your stride length from your height and whether you’re walking or running, then converts in either direction. It also shows how many steps make up a kilometre for you. Everything runs on your device.
Enter a value and your height to convert.
Stride length is estimated from your height and gait, so the result is an approximation. Actual distance varies with pace, terrain and individual stride.
How it works
Distance is just steps × stride length. The catch is stride length, which depends mostly on how tall you are. The tool uses a common rule of thumb: a walking stride is about 0.415 of your height, and a running stride roughly 0.65. So at 180 cm, a walking stride is around 75 cm, which makes 10,000 steps about 7.5 km.
Pick the direction (steps → distance or distance → steps), choose walk or run, and enter your height. The derived stride is shown so you can sanity-check it, and it doubles as a calibration knob — if you know your real stride differs, adjust your height input slightly to match. Because stride varies with speed, terrain and individual gait, treat the result as a solid estimate rather than a measured distance.
Practical examples
The 10,000-step goal
At 170 cm walking, your stride is about 71 cm, so 10,000 steps works out to roughly 7.1 km. A useful reality check on that daily target.
Planning a 5 km walk
Switch to distance → steps: 5 km for a 180 cm walker (75 cm stride) is about 6,700 steps. Handy for hitting a step goal by distance instead of counting.
Running covers more per step
The same 1,000 steps at 180 cm covers about 747 m walking but around 1.17 km running, because a running stride is much longer. That’s why the walk/run toggle matters.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the calculator need my height?
Stride length scales with height — taller people cover more ground per step. Using your height gives a far better estimate than a one-size-fits-all average, which is what most simple converters assume.
How accurate is the stride estimate?
The 0.415 walking factor is a well-established average, usually within about 10% of a person’s real stride. It’s an estimate, not a measurement — your actual stride depends on leg length, pace, fitness and terrain.
How can I find my true stride length?
Walk a known distance — say 10 metres — counting your steps, then divide the distance by the number of steps. If that differs from the tool’s figure, nudge your height input until the derived stride matches.
Why is the running stride so much longer?
Running involves a flight phase where both feet leave the ground, so each stride reaches further than a walking step. The tool uses roughly 0.65 of height for running versus 0.415 for walking to reflect that.
Do fitness trackers count steps the same way?
Roughly, but each device has its own step-detection and stride model, so their distance figures can differ from this tool’s. If your tracker knows your height and calibrates to your walks, trust it for distance; use this tool for quick manual conversions.
How many steps are in a kilometre?
It depends on your stride, which is why the tool shows a personalised "steps per km". As a rough guide, walking is often around 1,300–1,500 steps per kilometre for average heights.
Can I convert steps to miles?
The tool works in kilometres and metres. To get miles, divide the kilometre figure by 1.609 — or use a length converter for the final step.
Does it estimate calories burned?
No — this tool only converts steps and distance. Calories depend on your weight, pace and effort; a calorie or TDEE calculator is the right place for that.
Is my data kept private?
Yes. The conversion happens entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded, and analytics never receives it.
